In the insurance business, insurers often seek independent reviews from
physicians, especially in cases where a diagnosis or treatment is in question.
While working on their MBAs at LSU, Eric Arkin and Rich Krimmel had an idea to
form National Independent Review Organization (NIRO), a system to provide
insurance companies independent medical reviews delivered over the Internet. To
transform this idea into a working system, they contacted Technology Engineers.
Using the latest Internet development tools, our team developed a strategy and
set of requirements that would be an innovative approach to medical case
management. The system of interfaces between insurers, doctors and NIRO
administrators was built around a relational database designed from the ground
up. The fully implemented database system accepts requests from insurance
companies seeking independent reviews and allow NIRO administrators to assign the review to
physician/specialist via the Internet. Once the physician is
found and agrees to perform the evaluation, the secure medical records are
transferred over the Internet for review; and upon completion,
transferred back to NIRO. An administrator then performs a cursory review for
thoroughness and sends the evaluation to the requesting insurer.
The entire process can happen within a matter of hours, with the insurer getting
a completely independent review from a qualified, medical specialist. For
providing this service, NIRO charges a processing fee, and can handle medical
review cases anywhere at any time. The system is intricate technology allows
insurers, doctors and NIRO administrators to all operate independently and in
real-time. In a word, it’s innovation.
