National Independent Review Organization
Project: iNIRO System
The
National Independent Review Organization (NIRO) provides a service
to the insurance industry nationwide by making available a network
of more than
100 physicians who can review medical records and reports independent
of insurance companies. Technology Engineers designed, developed
and implemented an Internet-based system that permits insurance claims adjusters
who have
access to the web to request an independent review of medical records
using the NIRO website.
Using browser-based programs, the adjuster can attach digital images of medical reports and other documents to the request, which is then stored on the NIRO secure SQL database. NIRO personnel then assigns the case to a physician located anywhere in the United States and notifies him or her by e-mail. The physician then accesses the NIRO website and downloads the images. Upon completing the review using NIRO web forms, the physician e-mails NIRO to inform them that the review is complete, at which point NIRO personnel notifies the adjuster that the review is complete and sends him or her the physician’s report in digital form. The whole process can occur within hours rather than days using the previous method of overnight and U.S. Postal Service delivery.
